I joined HMGCC as a Graduate Project Manager 13 months ago. I started out working alongside a Senior Programme Manager offering programme and project support. This meant I gained a broad insight into both the organisation and the project management process and tools that are used here. Within a short time, I was managing three diverse technical projects, varying in cost, complexity and priority.
Before I joined HMGCC, I graduated with a degree in Computing - Business Information Systems to be exact. After that, I worked as an IT and Telecomms Engineer. During this time, I decided to pursue a career in project management, which I studied as part of my degree. This particular position appealed to me because it combined a great opportunity to join as a graduate Project Manager in a challenging and creative environment, with real potential to develop into a Senior Project Manager.
Throughout my first year, mentoring and training has always been available, along with the opportunity to gain project management qualifications. So far, I've attended several training days, including a week long 'making projects work' course. I've also acquired an APM certificate, which complements the training that I've received here. I work in a team of project and programme managers, and I've found that there's always someone willing to lend advice and support to help me do my job. Another thing I enjoy about working here is that management have encouraged me to provide direction about the areas I want to move into, or get development in.
Looking to the future, I plan to get my next level of APM certification. I also want to take on further responsibility by managing a larger number of projects in areas I'd love to gain experience in.
