Before I came here I was studying for a degree and then I also did a short stint at British Aerospace… I’d have to say it’s the interesting work – it’s always so varied – and it also seemed like the sort of place where I could put to use the skills I had as well as develop them. Because my job’s very technical, very hands-on, and it helps that the labs are really well equipped. And you get a chance to work with state-of-the-art equipment so that was another plus.
My first impressions of HMGCC – it was a high-tech company that worked in all aspects of engineering. I’d have to say it’s a pretty open atmosphere – it’s a friendly place to work. People here are capable, focused, dedicated to their work. And they’re also people you can trust, you know. They’re approachable, supportive, helpful.
Well, my training’s been a bit of a mixture – there’s been some formal stuff and some on-the-job work. Just, you know, whatever was needed at the time.
At the moment I’m currently working as acting Head of Department so I manage ten staff. A typical project for us would be working on a tranceiver module. I like working with a small group when it comes to really challenging technical stuff.
Well for me, I wanted to find an employer that was flexible and understanding. And that’s really what you get here. I think, as a member of staff, you really feel valued and everyone gets the time and space to grow. And the fact that the work that we do here is important – that really helps.
I’d have to say personally the thing that is the best for me is being involved at a high level in the technical side of things, like working on system specification and design. The work’s always so varied, and so it’s always fresh and interesting. And being a mentor to junior staff – that’s really rewarding as well.
I’d say if you’re looking for the perfect transition from studying into working, then this is the right place for you. Because the work here is challenging, varied, interesting but you don’t feel you’re being thrown in at the deep end. There’s always support there if you need it.
