Space - the latest frontier in our Top 10 Tech campaign

Space is the latest (but not final) frontier of our Top 10 Technologies campaign, in which we ask innovators to talk to us about their cutting-edge concepts.  

Tech experts from industry and academia are being invited to send in news of products or ideas they think could be of use to the national security community.    

Space based technology gives the opportunity to gain insight from and connect to some of the most remote and poorly connected parts of the world. We recognise space is a broad subject and HMGCC cannot talk openly about the full scope of its work in this area.  

But if you have affordable tech solutions you think could bring real impact in the area of space communications and sensing, we want to hear from you.  

We are interested in a broad range of emerging technologies that can give insights not possible to achieve via terrestrial approaches.  These include:  

• Platforms and technologies that can give the UK affordable and sovereign access to space, covering everything from thrusters for attitude control to advanced sensors. 

• Technologies that can deliver wide area, resilient or secure communications, flexibly and affordably. These could include novel approaches to beamforming, antenna structures and free space optical techniques. 

• High attitude platforms as well as satellites. 

 We launched our Top 10 Technologies campaign at the end of 2025 and so far have attracted more than 150 submissions from innovators keen to tell us about their latest technologies.  

 HMGCC is highlighting the space category in the same month as the launch of the Space Strategy by the UK government, which brings  

 £7.8 billion investment to the UK’s space sector, citing the fundamental nature of space to the UK’s economy, national security and daily life.  

 Our Chief Technology Officer Martin Brock said: “Our work in space and with our Top 10 Technologies campaign is closely aligned with this strategy, as we work alongside industry and academia to develop and achieve insights in ways beyond our work on the ground. 

 “So much of our work is secret, but fascinating in its scope, remit and the impact it has on national security and defence missions. But we invite innovators to treat this as the start of a conversation with us, in which we can explore whether your technologies could bring a real difference to our work to keep the UK safe.”
